Dr John Kessell
MBBS (UWA), MBA (AGSM), Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor (SCCA)
I work exclusively as a skin cancer and cosmetic doctor.
As a skin cancer doctor accredited by the Skin Cancer College of Australasia, my everyday work involves full skin checks, biopsy of suspicious skin lesions and medically treating skin cancers where appropriate.
I also perform a wide range of surgical procedures on the skin and am obsessively focused on achieving excellent results on the most cosmetically sensitive areas of the face, including nose, ears, eyelids and lips.
My surgical experience has included regularly assisting a leading plastic surgeon in the operating theatre to develop proficiency with advanced skin surgery techniques using flaps and skin grafts. I also regularly assist a leading oculoplastic ophthalmologist on complicated eyelid surgery at a private hospital.
I also perform a range of non cancer-related skin surgery such as removing prominent moles and benign lumps, excising cysts and fatty lumps (lipomas), and revising unsightly scars.
On the cosmetic side of my practice, I undertake facial rejuvenation work using cosmetic injectables to soften effects of ageing and sun damage. I also have a particular interest in treating acne and rosacea in teenagers and adults.
I am a West Australian medical graduate who trained in paediatrics at New York University Medical Centre, gaining US paediatric board certification in 1987. I moved to Sydney in 1988.
On a personal note, I enjoy cooking, eating and bush walking with my wonderful partner, who helps keep me grounded with mindfulness and kindness, and take great joy and inspiration from my two sons, who are so much wiser beyond their years than I was at their ages. I feel privileged my work provides opportunities for me to help people improve their quality of life, but also their outlook on life.

Why Are Skin Checks So Important?
Skin checks are vital for early detection of skin cancer, especially in Australia’s high-risk environment. By catching suspicious spots early, checks help ensure effective treatment and protect your long-term health.
- Detects skin cancer early, improving treatment success
- Allows for less invasive treatment options
- Provides peace of mind with regular monitoring
- Tracks changes in moles and spots over time
- Provides personalized skin protection advice
- Reduces risk of advanced, harder-to-treat skin cancer
